August is drawing to a close and you know what that means? The fall feels are right around the corner!! And while the weather may take some time to catch up I’m kicking it into gear with my fall container garden. They are just little babies right now but over the next few months I’m going to watch them grow and fill out the containers, adding a warm welcome to our front porch stairs. Let me show you what I did!
These planters live on either side of our front stairs and our quite literally the first thing you see as you approach our cabin. They also receive a LOT of sun as the front of our home is oriented towards the southeast. So.. not only do these container plantings need to set the tone for the season, but they also need to be pretty hardy. Wimpy plants need not apply.
The Thriller
My first task was to choose a “thriller” plant for my “living flower arrangement” and I immediately gravitated toward purple fountain grass. The feathery grass reminds me of wheat and the harvest and I love that the ends develop a deep purple while the stems have this shock of lime green that always looks so stunning against our chocolate brown cabin. In my experience fountain grasses have grown quickly and beautifully inside planters even in the most humid southern states, Tennessee I’m looking at you.
The Filler
I anchored the fountain grass on either side with two variations of dolce coral bells, “spearmint” and “wildberry.” The curvy leaves add a lot of interest and are such a contrast next to the fountain grass. For additional filler plants I added in dusty Miller, for a softer frosty look and then my favorite of the whole planter the Proven Winners Supertunia in “Latte.” I’m on board with anything named “latte” and this flower does not disappoint and makes my neutral color-loving heart very happy. It’s a beautiful creamy white with a deep, deep almost brown, purple center. If there ever was a flower made for fall, this is it!
The Spiller
At the end I popped in some creeping jenny to repeat that lovely lime color that looks so pretty with my house. The creeping Jenny with spill all down the sides of my container and get more magical as it grows.
There you have it, a sun-loving fall planter combo that is sure to please! You can find links to all of these items below. Thank you for stopping by!
